Frequently Asked Questions

Checking In

Where are check-ins saved?

Check-ins are saved as regular events in your calendar. You can see them in the Calendar app and on any other device that syncs that calendar. Whether they sync depends on the settings of that calendar’s account (such as iCloud).

How do I change the calendar check-ins are saved to?

Choose a calendar in Dropin’s Settings > Save To. To save a single event to a different calendar, choose it in Calendar on the event form. This doesn’t change your settings.

Can I change the start time, end time, or date?

Yes. On the event form, you can choose the date and set the time in 5-minute steps, so you can also log something on the previous day. Pick a duration from 15 minutes to 3 hours. To change the duration selected for new events, go to Settings > Default Duration.

Can I save without choosing a location?

Yes. You can leave the location empty, but the event needs a title.

Why can’t I tap the save button?

You can’t save while any of the following is true.

Places

Why don’t I see places near me?

Make sure Dropin is allowed to use your location in the Settings app. Dropin also can’t find nearby places while you’re offline. Either way, you can still check in by choosing a place from your location history or by typing a place name.

How are suggestions ordered?

Places from your history near your current location come first, ordered by how often you use them, followed by nearby places ordered by distance. When you type a name, Dropin filters your history and Apple Maps search results.

How do I check in to a place that isn’t suggested?

Type its name in the field at the top of the location screen, then tap Done on the keyboard. The name you type becomes the location.

Why am I asked to allow precise location every time I open Dropin?

When Precise Location is turned off for Dropin in the Settings app, Dropin asks once each time it opens for temporary permission, so it can find nearby places accurately. To stop being asked, turn on Precise Location. If you decline, Dropin finds places using your approximate location.

How do I delete my location history?

In Dropin’s Settings > Location History, swipe left to delete places one at a time, or delete them all at once.

Home Screen

Why don’t events I created in the Calendar app appear on the home screen?

The home screen shows only events created by Dropin on this device. Events created in other apps don’t appear.

Why don’t check-ins I made in Dropin on another device appear?

The home screen shows only events created by Dropin on this device. Events created on another device don’t appear there, even if they sync to your calendar. You can see them in the Calendar app.

How do I edit or delete a check-in?

On the home screen, tap a check-in to edit it, or touch and hold to delete it. Changes you make in the Calendar app also appear on the home screen.

Why can’t I edit some check-ins?

All-day events and events in calendars you can’t write to can’t be edited. You can still delete all-day events.

What does “The selected calendar is unavailable…” mean?

The calendar you chose in Save To has been deleted or can no longer be written to, so check-ins are saved to your default calendar. Tap the message to choose a different calendar.

Starting From Outside the App

How do I check in from Control Center?

Add the Check In control to Control Center, the Lock Screen, or the Action button. The control doesn’t appear in Add a Control until you open Dropin once.

Can I use Dropin with the Shortcuts app?

Yes. Use the Check In action. You can also use the Open URLs action with a URL listed in Dropin’s Settings > About Dropin > URL Scheme.

How do I go straight to choosing a place when I open Dropin?

In Dropin’s Settings, turn on Open New Event on Launch. Dropin then starts a new event when it opens, so you can choose a location right away.

Permissions and Data

Why does Dropin need full access to my calendar?

Dropin uses it to save check-ins as events and to show the events created in Dropin on the home screen. Without calendar access, you cannot check in. You can change this permission at any time in the Settings app.

Can I use Dropin without allowing location access?

Yes. You can still check in from your location history or by typing a place name. Nearby places won’t appear.

Does my location history sync to my other devices?

No. Your location history and settings are stored only on this device and not synced.

What happens to my check-ins if I delete Dropin?

Events saved to your calendar remain. Your location history, settings, and the record of the events you create in Dropin are deleted, so the home screen is empty if you reinstall the app.

Does Dropin cost anything?

No. Dropin is free, with no in-app purchases or ads.

How do I see the welcome screen again?

The welcome screen appears only the first time you open Dropin, and there’s no way to show it again.
